"Leah de los Santos is a Filipina singer who is reaping rave reviews in Europe for her performances in Broadway hits such as "Miss Saigon," "Beauty and the Beast," "Cats," etc. She has an excellent leading man in Norwegian singer Yngve Gasoy-Romdal, and together they are more than making nice music. They came to Cebu, invited by Carlos and Mariquita Yeung, to perform in a program dubbed "Music of the Night," which filled the SM City Cebu Theater One to full capacity for two consecutive nights. All for an excellent cause-Operation Smile, which is an annual undertaking of Mariquita's charitable foundation. Cathay Pacific flew them in together with the band members: Andreas Hartwig (piano and keyboards), Stefan Obermann (guitar), Jon Diven (bass) and Daniel Fleischmann (drums). Pre-concert preparations were efficiently handled by Benjie Diola, president of the Mariquita S. Yeung Foundation, and its executive director, Monette Alino. Leah was praised for her lilting voice and capacity for drama. Yngve, of slight build, is capable of great volume with his powerful voice. They alternated between solos and duets, moving through the elaborately decorated stage with elegant furnishings and art objects from the Yeungs' Villa Mariquita. There must have been 25 songs in the program, which featured well-known tunes from "West Side Story," "Phantom of the Opera," "Jekyll and Hyde," "Evita," "Sweet Charity," "Sunday in the Park with George," "Hair," "Aspects of Love," "Scarlet Pimpernel" and "Funny Girl," with Yngve doing the Streisand number "Don't Rain on My Parade." More numbers came from "Saturday Night Fever," "Merrily We Roll Along," "Company," "Miss Saigon" (the duet "Sun and Moon"), "King and I," "Annie Get Your Gun" (the hilarious duet of "Anything You Can Do"), "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Once On This Island." Second-night concertgoers were in for an extra song that hushed everyone to rapture-Leah singing Henry Mancini's "Moon River," and who doesn't swoon to those lyrics by Johnny Mercier? They had a fabulous show in Cagayan de Oro as well, invited by Joe and Oche Golez at their Liceo de Cagayan University gym for the benefit of a foundation, which helps save the Cagayan River from pollution. And they will be performing in Manila this year also for the benefit of Operation Smile.
